Fräki Sonja

Sonja Fräki (born 1977 in Helsinki) started her piano studies at the age of four. 1997-2003 she studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under Teppo Koivisto.

 


She played her diploma exam in 2002 achieving the highest remarks and graduated as Master of Music the next year. Additionally, Ms. Fräki studied at the Music University of Karlsruhe, Germany, under Professor Carmen Piazzini, at a postgraduate programme called Soloist Class (Konzertexamen) graduating in June 2004. She has also been an active participant at many international Master Classes, e.g. under Professors Emanuel Krasovsky, Alexander Jenner, Peter Eicher, Menahem Pressler, Eugen Indjic, Pnina Salzman, Matti Raekallio and Lev Natochenny. At the moment her teacher is Prof. Erik T. Tawaststjerna. Sonja Fräki was the winner of 3rd Prize in the International Liszt Piano Competition in Wroclaw, Poland 2008. She won the 4th Prize in the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund 2003. She was also a finalist in the International Paderewski Piano Competition 1998 in Poland where she won the 6th Prize. Additionally, she received a special Prize at the International Maj Lind Piano Competition in Helsinki 2007. She received a DAAD-award from the Music University of Karlsruhe in 2003. Sonja Fräki has performed as a soloist with various orchestras in Finland and Germany, e.g. Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Karlsruhe University Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Michaels Strings and Joensuu Orchestra. She has given recitals, piano duo concerts and chamber music concerts in Finland, Germany, Sweden, Portugal, Russia and Holland. She has also played at many festivals, e.g. at the Mänttä Music Festival in Finland. At the moment she is teaching piano at the Arkipelag School of Music and working as an accompanist at the Sibelius Academy. She is also studying in the Doctoral Programme of Sibelius Academy, her focus being on the piano music of Kalevi Aho.
