Sikorska-Wojtacha Monika

She started her piano studies in the State Higher School of Music in Lódz with Prof. Wladyslaw Kedra and finished in the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice with Prof. Boleslaw Woytowicz. The pianist was a laureate of the 1st National Piano Competition (1970), the 4th Fryderyk Chopin Artistic Scholarship Competition (1972), the 7th Festival of Polish Pianism (1974).

 


She is an active performer, giving recitals, chamber and symphony concerts at home and abroad (including Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine, France, Italy, Germany, Japan). Monika Sikorska-Wojtacha has made several recordings (including archival ones) both for radio and television. She recorded the CD containing piano pieces by Boleslaw Woytowicz (12 Etudes, 3 Polish Dances, 2 Mazurkas) for Polish leading label “Acte Prealable”. She participated in recording a CD with Roman Twardowski’s pieces (Little Sonata, Musica Concertante). Her piano repertoire ranges from music of harpsichordists to the avant-garde. Her main interest concentrates on piano works by C. Debussy and W.A. Mozart. She is also concerned with Polish music starting with pre-Chopin composers (M. Szymanowska, F. Dobrzynski), the composers of the turn of the 19th and 20th century (K. Szymanowski) and contemporary music. In the case of the latter, she premiered many pieces, including Piano Sonata no. 1 by P. Radko, Concertino for Piano and String Orchestra by J.W. Hawel, Sonata no.1 and 2 by A. Hundziak. She is the first performer of Piano Concerto by M. Spisak, the piece which fell in oblivion for half a century. She performs also oratorio and cantata music composed for piano and vocal ensembles such as Petite Messe Solennelle by G. Rossini, Gypsy Songs and Liebeslieder by J. Brahms. She collaborates with numerous musicians and chamber ensembles including the Silesian String Quartet and pianists Joanna Domanska and Hubert Salwarowski. Except her artistic activity, Monika Sikorska-Wojtacha is also engaged in teaching as Professor of the Piano Faculty at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice where she also acts as the Chairman of the Piano Faculty. Among her students there are the laureates of national and international piano competitions (E. Kupiec, W. Stysz, B. Karaskiewicz, M. Baczewska, P. Grelowski). She also takes under her guidance gifted young people from secondary music schools. Monika Sikorska-Wojtacha acts as a member of the jury of many national competitions and conducts numerous consultations, masterclasses and piano workshops. The pianist was awarded the Silver and Gold Cross of Merit
